There is one thing a lot of people forget to do that could make the difference in getting the job they want.
It is sending the thank you email or letter. Some people call it the follow up email or letter.
It does not matter what you call it as long as you do it.
When the competition is fierce it's the little things that help you stand out. The Thank You Letter or email can be the knockout blow for your competitors.
Here are a two examples of thank you letters to give you an idea of what others are doing.
Here is another example for you.
Below is a simple thank you letter that I use. When it stops working I still stop using it.
Please keep in mind there are many ways to format this document but I like to keep things simple and short.
Let's break this letter down to help you understand why everything is there.
First, you should always include the date. My recommendation is you send this letter as soon as you get home and before you get undressed. You need to stay in your interview attire when sending it.
Second, when leaving your interview please ask for a business card.
This will allow you to follow up with the thank you letter. Never leave the interview without some contact information (even if it is written down).
Finally, address the key individual by name and title. Include the company name and address. Make sure to include their name in the salutation. If you have more than one person to email then send them a separate email personalized for them. A general, mass email will not work.
In the first paragraph, you want to show your appreciation for the individual meeting with you to discuss the position.
The second paragraph is critical because here you will have to take something that was said during the interview, paraphrase it, tie in your experience, and demonstrate how the company will benefit from hiring you.
The third paragraph should show your excitement and interest in hearing back from the interviewer.
Old School Still Work
I had several clients ask me if, "...sending a hand written letter would work too?" I said, "Yes" and I would still send the email but follow up with the card or letter in the mail.
I had several people do this and they all got calls back immediately because they did something extra that was not expected.
Once person was told she would not be a good fit for the position she interviewed for but they had a partner company that could use her skills and forwarded her resume with their highest recommendation and she got the job.
Sending something through the mail does work you just have to be strategic about it. In some cases, if it is a job you really want, see how you can be different from everyone else while demonstrating you are the best for the job.
For example, you could send a FEDEX package as they always get to their destination and could make the difference. Do not limit yourself.
Consider all possibilities and even try a few. What do you really have to lose when you do not have a job or have a job that you hate? Absolutely nothing but you have so much to gain!
At this point, you have gone through all ten modules of content within the Job Hunt Essentials Training.
As simple as the concepts are you may not have been using them or you could have given up too soon. It doesn't matter because you can get up, brush yourself off and start over again.
I will leave you with this thought to help you to fully understand what I am trying to help you to accomplish.
Everything on the planet has foundation principles or what many call, "The Basics."
In order to learn anything you start from the beginning (basics) and work your way up to the advance stuff.
I have learned over the past 26-years that when you master the basics you will do so much better than the people who skip it and try to learn the advance stuff.
The basics rarely change. Without a solid foundation, how can you expect to build anything that last?
You want a job or career that will last right?
Master the basics in your field of interest or areas of expertise and you will stand head and shoulders above 95% of the competition. You will have staying power.
I was extremely fortunate to have stumbled upon this concept many decades ago and it has helped me to deal with and overcome some tough life storms. The basics always saved me and I am grateful for mastering them.
Now it's your turn to get and master the basics.
Trust me when I tell you months and years from now you will be thankful you did it this way. No one will be able to take this away from you. It will just work every time you apply it.
If you are serious about transforming your life and willing to put forth the effort, I can assist you to achieve your personal, professional and educational goals.
I only help people who help themselves! Hopefully, you will be one of the 100,000 people I will help this year.
I wish you much success in your endeavor to get a better job or to find a job. You have all that you need. You just have to figure out how to use it effectively.
Until next time!
