Job Hunt Essentials

How It All Started

How It All Started

By now you are wondering, “Who is this Shawn 'The Job Hunt Ninja' Nelson character providing this information?”

It is a long story but I will provide a synopsis to help bring you up to speed.

The beginning – The Covenant

It was January 1990, I had just received a book via mail order from an author I cannot recall at the time I write this.

When reading that book, I came across the word “covenant.” It was the first time I had heard it.

It was explained that when you make a covenant it is for life. It cannot be broken. If one was to break the covenant it would mean death.

I picked up the Bible and read that God made a covenant with Abraham and God promised to keep His Word no matter what. But Abraham had to uphold his end of the agreement too.

At first, I did not get it as I didn’t go to church, read the Bible and did not understand the “God” thing.

One day in March 1990, I remember taking the advice in the book and wrote down exactly what I wanted God to do for me and what I would do for Him.

There is one line that I will never forget. I wrote, “God if you help me to get out of this situation and get my life straight, whatever I learn I will give the information and knowledge I possess to anyone who asks of me.”

By the end of 1991, I had the chance to prove if I would give freely to those who asked for assistance. That was the beginning of my journey in fulfilling my covenant and helping people to achieve their personal, professional, and educational goals.

First Steps – Foster Care

My first assignment was at a Foster Care agency in New York City. I got the job because I  could type very fast, knew the software, and because I was a male. They wanted to change the scenery in the office.

This was the best 3 ½ years of my life. I learned so much during this time because I was enrolled in school full time, working full time, raising two kids, doing an internship three evenings a week, and still having fun and loving life.

Plus, I had a coworker who served as a mentor without me realizing it at the time. She led by example and was always on top of her game.

She was the College/Career Coordinator and taught me so much about dealing with people, integrity, honesty and just doing right because it is the right.

Working with the kids in foster care was another blessing as I got to interact with people who were just like me but had to deal with life issues that bypassed me.

The foundation for what I would accomplish in the future was being laid and I did not know.

Lifelong friendships were being developed, ideologies and beliefs were being framed. But at that time, I was not aware what was happening.

The Trial – Young Adults I

It wasn’t until I got paid to teach computer classes in 1997 that I realized I had something to offer at-risk young adults. I noticed they lacked the skills needed to get and keep a job.

I provided them with tips and insights I learned over the years.

They would take it, use it and get jobs. I had no idea what I was doing but it was working. I just kept doing what I thought worked and it did. I never documented anything.

The Errors – College

When I finally began teaching college as an Adjunct Professor at Touro College, The College of New Rochelle and Metropolitan College of New York it dawned on me that I had something special.

I could not put my finger on it but I was able to relate to people and help them to see things that others could not.

It was weird because someone would ask me a question and I would open my mouth and the answer would come out.

Yet, I knew I did not know the answer prior to the question being asked. Each time that happened I was amazed!

I was able to develop rapport easily with staff and students. Gained the trust of complete strangers yet I never abused it.

I made a lot of mistakes while learning how to teach at that level but I learned from them too!

It went from someone giving me a chance to teach at the college level to having former students highly recommend my class!

You must understand as an Adjunct you are not guaranteed to teach each semester. If students do not sign up for the class you do not have a class to teach.

My class always had 25+ students and they all said, “You came highly recommended.” “Wow,” is what I always said.

Remember, I was just giving back to those who asked. At least that is how I saw it.

The Proof – Young Adults II

Teaching college allowed me to hone my presentation skills and work on projecting my voice.

I helped people to become successful in their careers and personal life. But it was from 2006 to 2010 that I realized I had something of value and substance.

I dealt with two different populations and each of them provided the same feedback, “This works Mr. Nelson. Wow!”

I began to take notice of what worked and what didn’t. I started evaluating what worked for me and what did not work.

In time, I developed a methodology to help people get interviews, ace the interview and get job offers.

What was ironic was I did not tell people anything they did not know. I just help them to put the pieces together in a way that worked for them.

The Results - Today

I knew back in 2010, when I left a job to take care of my son, that I was close to retiring soon.

My definition of retirement is being able to do what I want when I wanted to do it without having to worry about money while helping people to live a better life.

I decided to put my methods, strategies and tactics to the test.

I purposely wanted to go back to helping and training people who received public assistance and food stamps. Why?

I knew if I could successfully help someone society sees as at the bottom of the totem pole to gain and keep a job then what I am teaching has to be effective.

I will let the words of a couple of participants tell you how things worked out for them.

"Shawn, I cannot thank you enough. the biggest lessons I learned was to research everything as knowledge and confidence makes you a great interviewee. Also, my husband used some of your tips and he got a promotion." - Celest G., Queens, NY - Customer Service Rep

"Mr. Nelson took a rough and rugged person like me and molded me into an interviewee powerhouse where I am comfortable demonstrating my experience and can answer any interview questions. Thanks Mr. Nelson." - Jmichael R., Queens, NY - Customer Service Rep

One day as I was taking public transportation, I ran into one of my former students and she said,

"Mr. Nelson. Oh my goodness. I still use that resume you created for me and it has landed me so many great paying jobs. Now I am working at a law firm in Manhattan and love it. Thank you so much."

I remembered that person and you should know I did her resume back in 2009 and that testimonial was given to me in June 2016 while waiting for the train to go home.

I get a lot of this as I travel around NYC as I have helped over 75,000 people since I returned back to New York City in 2001.

What I show you will work regardless of what is happening with the economy.

Clearly, she did not have a problem getting jobs all those years where others were complaining they could not find work.

She did all of this with a simple, effective resume that is still working.

My Sister

I have to admit you would not be reading this if it were not for my sister Katina.

When I left the job in 2010 to take care of my son her best friend, whom I helped to get a job where I worked, asked, “...will Shawn be okay without a job?”

My sister responded, “You don’t know my brother. He has never had problems getting jobs. Heck, he would leave a job without a job and still get a job within 30-days. I don’t know how he does it.”

When I heard that I thought, “Even my sister can see I have something. It is time to put this stuff together and test it on others.”

I am a firm believer that if others can get the same or similar results as you then your stuff works.

As a matter of fact, I often have people tell me, “Mr. Nelson, after our discussion in class, I went home and talked about it with my significant other and children. They really understood it.”

Not only am I helping the individuals that attend my classes but everyone in their household.

Now that is how you impact generations without actually trying.

That is a wonderful feeling knowing that lives are being changed with the information I present. Powerful! Just powerful!

Who Am I?

I have over 26-years of in-the-trenches experience working with individuals on parole and probation, receiving public assistance and food stamps, in homeless shelters, high school dropouts, and others who are considered in poverty according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

I am a high school dropout who got a G.E.D., went on to get a Bachelor's and Master’s. Started a PhD but have not finished it yet. I will complete it in due time.

Ultimately, I help individuals to improve their standard of living using tools and strategies that must work or they continue to repeat a vicious cycle and fail in life as well as their children.

I am a God loving man, husband to a beautiful wife that I love very much, father of five, and enjoy experiencing what life has to offer!

Why Should You Listen To Me?

The population I work with is mandated to attend my program. Therefore, many of them are not happy and do not want to be at my location.

I have to take a potential hostile individual, quickly develop rapport and demonstrate how attending my program and sitting in my class will help them go from being unemployed to obtaining a job.

I use simple, yet effective strategies that work with some of the toughest populations.

I mean if it works for them don’t you think it can work for you too? You should have less barriers than they have right?

The insights, strategies and tips I provide will help you stand out from the crowd and get you noticed by employers.

I will help you to paint a beautiful picture, so when employers see your resume they will want to call you for an interview.

Basically, what I show you will work if you work it and are prepared.

If you choose to not apply the information then it will not work.

Should You Work With Me?

We have now come full circle. In the beginning, I told you about the Covenant I made with God.

Throughout the years, I have fulfilled my end of the arrangement and God has done His part.

It was not easy for me by any means but the journey has been o much fun and worth it.

During that time, I realized people put their lives in my hands.

They make very important decisions based on the information I give them. So, I do not play games with their life. I take what I do very serious.

Do not get me wrong, during my classes we joke around and have fun but my participants know that I am serious about helping them. If I do not know an answer I will say that.

If you decide to purchase any products or services from me, I expect you to:

  • Be focused
  • Put forth effort
  • Persevere
  • Be serious
  • Follow instruction without deviating

If, and I truly mean this, if you cannot perform one of the five items at or above 100% please do not waste your time or mine.

I do not want your money. Seriously!

I would rather you be honest and wait to purchase anything from me than to invest your hard earn money and tell me it doesn’t work (when I know it does) simply because you are not putting forth effort and want to take short cuts.

There are no short cuts with what I show you because all the fluff has been removed. Modifying what I show you before you apply it and know how it works for you is a waste of time.

I always tell my students, “Prove me wrong. Show me my stuff does not work by applying it the way I tell you.”

So far no one has succeeded! Are you up for the challenge?

Until next time!
